The Sims 3: Death and Ghost Guide

This applies to both expansions and the Xbox 360, and PS3  console versions of the game.

How do I bring someone back from the dead?
There is an opportunity where the science lab asks you to bring a dead loved one to the science building for testing. Your living Sim must at least be friends with the dead Sim you want to resurrect. Completing this will give you a playable ghost. You will not get the resurrection opportunity phone call right away when a Sim dies, it may take a long time if your living Sim has skills. The living Sim having skills adds “skill related opportunities” to the pool of potential opportunities. If your Sim knows nothing, and has never left the house, you will get the ghost opportunity first. Make sure you have no opportunities and deny any that you receive until you get the one asking you to bring your loved one to the lab.

What if they died on another lot?
Go to the graveyard, walk into the mausoleum, and choose “Manage Graves” all unplaced stones will be there. You can place them in the yard, or take them home in the Sims inventory. Be warned, some people have reported a bug with this where they cannot get the tombstone of someone who died.

Quickest way to bring someone back from the dead.
Make sure you kill Sims with the highest needs possible. (Some like Drowning are unavoidable) Every time they spawn from their grave they will have the exact same needs as they had when they died. After you kill someone, bring a new person with 0 skills to the lot. Then use the testingcheatsenabled cheat code and set their needs to static. This will essentially make them stand still doing nothing. After a few game hours (maybe days tops) they will get their first opportunity, since they have 0 skills and the lot has a ghost on it, the opportunity will be to resurrect the dead. Place the tomb stone in their inventory and head to the science lab to bring them back! With this method it should only take 10 minutes to create a ghost, assuming you already have a dead sim.

Creating Gray Old Age Ghosts
The gray ghost is a Sim who died from old age, the quickest way to do this is to use the testingcheatsenabled cheat. Hold shift and left click on the active Sim and choose “Trigger Age Transition” this will make them die from old age and their ghost will be gray and sparkly.

Creating Blue Water Ghosts
The blue water ghost is a Sim who drowned to death, the quickest way to do this is to build a small pool (3×3) and tell the Sim to swim in it. Once they are in, build walls around the pool and use the testingcheatsenabled cheat, hold shift and drag their energy meter to the left. this will make them drown and their ghost will be blue and watery.

Creating Purple/Pink Starvation Ghosts
The purple/pink ghost is a Sim who starved to death, the quickest way to do this is use the testingcheatsenabled cheat. Once you turn the cheat on hold shift, left click the hunger meter and drag it all the way to the left. The Sim will die of starvation and will have a purple/pink smokey look to them. If you want to do it the long way, just wall them up in a room or turn free will off. Don’t let them eat, and within a couple days they’ll die and turn into a purple ghost.

Creating Red Fire Ghosts
Red ghosts are Sims that died by fire. Build a small room with a fireplace. Cover the floor around the fireplace with multiple rugs and direct your Sim inside the room. Delete the door. Start a fire in the fireplace. Before long, the room goes up in flames and the Sim is trapped inside. The fire will eventually put itself out, once all the rugs have burned up. Red ghosts coloring moves similar to flames and smoke is coming out of them.

Creating Yellow Electricity Ghosts
Yellow ghosts are Sims that died by electrocution. This one takes a bit more setup than many of the others. You must have a room filled with broken plumbing (sinks, bathtubs etc.) so that there is water all over the floor. In the house you use to kill the “victim Sim”, you should have another Sim with the Technophobe trait. Have the Technophobe sabotage a large stereo, then use build mode to put the stereo in the room with all the puddles. Now have the “victim Sim” go in and try to repair the stereo. After a very short while he will get shocked and will stop repairing the electronics. Make them continue repairing the stereo and they will be shocked a second time and die. Yellow ghosts have constant electricity going through them.

Meteor Shower Deaths
The Sims 3 Ambitions expansion brings a new way to die in the form of the Meteor Shower. The sky will grow dark, and meteors will begin to fall. You should have your Sim vacate the area or they may get squished by one of these killers from the heavens.

The Mummy’s Curse

The Sims 3 World Adventures introduces a new way for Sims to die. The Mummy’s Curse. Sims get cursed by mummies sometimes after they lose in a fight. The likelihood of this seems random, as sometimes your Sim will get knocked out. If you do get cursed, you’ll know it. Your Sim will be hit with an onslaught of dark energy from the mummy who will then leave them alone. From the moment your Sim is cursed, they’ll have 14 days to cure it. If they haven’t done any of the available options on the mummies page, they’ll die, disintegrated in a cloud of evil energy. Nothing’s wrong with your graphics card — when the curse starts to get closer to taking effect, your screen will be met with a moving dark ring around the edges that looks very sinister. There will occasionally be evil music played as well as the time draws near. Upon death, Sims killed by the mummy’s curse have dark, black and white ghost

Do ghosts have negative effects like they did in The Sims 2?
Not really, drowned ghosts do not cause puddles, starved ghosts do not raid the fridge Etc. They can temporarily posses an item, rendering it unusable while it floats and shakes in the air. In The Sims 3, ghosts will come out of their graves between 11pm and 6am and act like normal town NPCs, you can interact with them the way you could with a normal NPC for the duration of the in-game night. If the ghost Sim and a Sim in the household were enemies when the ghost died, it will still hate the living Sim. You can repair a relationship with a ghost Sim the way you can with a normal NPC Sim. Playable ghosts are a unique life state much like vampires or zombies from The Sims 2. Unlike The Sims 2 however, they function exactly the same as a normal living Sim when you resurrect them. They have the same basic needs. The only difference is the character skinning, the sounds they make and the occasional scared reaction from certain trait types.

Some people have reported the ghosts doing things like raiding the fridge. This is not because the type of ghost but is instead a function of them having needs. If a ghost is hungry it will cook, Etc.

Preventing death
There are a few ways to prevent death in The Sims 3.

  • Turning aging off will prevent all Sims from dying of old age (without testingcheatsenabled).
  • If aging is on, eating a life fruit will add 1 day to your Sims life span.
  • Eating Ambrosia will reset the amount of days in your current “days until aging”.
  • Having a Death Blossom in your inventory will give you a second chance at life. This does not work on Sims dying of old age.
  • The Brave trait will reduce the chance you will burn to death.
  • The Daredevil trait will reduce the chance you will burn to death.
  • The Handy trait will make your Sim immune to electrocution.
  • The Hydrophobic trait will reduce the chance you will drown to death.
  • The Loser trait will have the grim reaper resurrect you the first time you die. This is not 100% of the time.
  • The Natural Cook trait will reduce the chance you will burn to death.
  • The Vegetarian trait will add days to your life time.

How do I grow a Death Flower?
Death Blossoms are a special plant type in The Sims 3. You can either Fish a Death Flower seed up, which is rare and random, or you can harvest one wild Death Flower, per neighborhood, in the cemetery. You should then have a Sim with the Green Thumb trait plant it and maintain it. The problem most people have while growing a Death Flower, is that once you harvest it, it dies. This is why you need the Green Thumb trait. A Sim with the Green Thumb trait can bring the Death Flower back to life one time after harvesting it. Which causes one Death Blossom to become two, and two becomes four, and so on. You may also grow a Death Flower with a special seed that you collect.

Death Flowers
Death Flowers will cause the Grim Reaper to take the flower instead of the Sim’s soul for all causes of death. With one in the inventory, your Sim will be immune to all forms of death, including old age. With Ambrosia, this can make Sims immortal without disabling aging.

Unlucky Sims
Unlucky Sims are immune to death by unnatural causes, such as accidents like fires. The reaper will spare the Sim’s soul out of pity, so this trait is by far not useless.

What is Ambrosia? How do I become a normal Sim after dying?
Ambrosia is a food you make in The Sims 3. It is able to reset your Sims entire current amount of days before aging. To make Ambrosia, you will need the following:

1. Cooking skill of 10
2. Death Fish (skill 10 fishing)
3. Life Fruit (skill 9 or 10 gardening)
4. 12,000 Simoleons to buy the recipe (you may also learn it while watching TV)

Death Fish can only be fished up with a fishing skill of 10. You must be fishing in the pond in the graveyard between 11 PM and 5 AM and using angel fish as bait. Doing this you will get at least 1 Death Fish a night.
Life Fruit is a special plant. To grow it, collect as many Special Seeds as you can and plant them. You will eventually have a few life fruit bushes.
The recipe is sold at the book store.
When you have everything you need and a cooking skill of 10, all you need to do is click on the fridge and you will have the option to make Ambrosia.

WARNING: When a Sim becomes alive again after eating ambrosia, their skin color MAY be different than it was before they died. This is a bug. Make sure you save before eating Ambrosia, reloading the save and eating it a few times will eventually get you the right skin color.

Rumored deaths
This is a list of deaths that are unconfirmed.

  • Death by choking.
  • Death while exploring the catacombs.
  • Death while giving child-birth.
  • Death during “Woohoo”.

If you experience any of these, please include a screen shot.

  • When a ghost is playable, it can have a baby. Occasionally a ghost baby will be… “born”.
  • Ghost babies have their tomb stone in their inventory.
  • Ghost authors do not receive royalties from any books they received while alive.
  • If you have tombstones [a fairly amount] on your lot, at night you might see fog form around your lot where the tombstones are.

Ghost Babies
To make a ghost baby, develop a relationship with a ghost as a female Sim and get the ghost to ‘Try for Baby’ with them. You can also try this with a playable ghost male as well. If you have both ghost female and male you can make a ghost baby that way. There will be no father in the family tree as though it were an immaculate conception. With males, you’ll need to make the ghost playable via the science lab opportunity. There is a 50/50 shot of getting a ghost baby instead of a normal Sim baby when they try this way. There isn’t any major difference between a ghost baby and a normal Sim baby.

Returning a Ghost to the Sims 3 Netherworld
You can send a playable ghost Sim back to the netherworld by clicking the urn or tombstone in their inventory. Ghost Sims will eventually need to return to the netherworld once they’ve been made playable. This is due to the aging feature, which applies even to ghosts. That is, unless you’ve never resurrected them fully with ambrosia; or you have aging set to off. Eventually the Sim could be resurrected again because their ghost will return from the netherworld in the future. When is not yet determined, but they do come back.

How to Manage the Dead in the Sims 3
When Sims who are not in your active household die, they go to the mausoleum at the local graveyard. The tombs of family friends and other Sims can be managed here. By doing so, you can get the tombstone or urn required to resurrect dead Sims, let them haunt your household or add them to the cemetery.

Urns Tombstones and Haunts
Sims who die on your lot will leave behind an urn or tombstone. Whether it’s an urn or tombstone depends on its location. When a Sim’s grave is indoors, it will be an urn. Outdoors you’ll see a tombstone. You can change this appearance at will by moving the ‘grave’ indoors or outdoors.

Note: that there are at times bugs that cause a gravestone or urn to vanish with no known resolution. A Sim could die on your lot and leave nothing behind, unfortunately.

After midnight, a Sim’s ghost may appear and haunt the lot where its grave is placed. They’ll vanish by morning. During that time, your Sim may interact with the ghost, but most of the time they’ll just behave erratically. They may do some odd things associated with their cause of death. Sims who’ve died of starvation may head for the fridge to grab a snack, and Sims who’ve died in a fire may take a shower. They can actually break the shower too. So a haunt can be amusing at first but ends up quite annoying as they ever so slowly piss you off.

To get rid of the haunts on a  Sim’s current lot, you could take their urn or tombstone to the public cemetery in town. For legacy’s; which often have a lot of deaths and could be overrun by haunts at night, it’s suggested you make a family cemetery out of a nearby lot.

To do this, go into Edit Town mode and select a Public lot, such as a fishing spot or a park area. Decorate the lot any way you wish with fencing, flowers, benches, etc. Do everything you want the first time because if you go back to that lot in Edit Town after placing tombstones, all of them will be returned to your family inventory and you’ll have to place them again. After you’ve completed the setup and decoration of your cemetery, go back to the game. Pick up any grave that you wish to place in your cemetery and simply go to the lot and place it wherever you wish. Eventually the lot will show up in the town view as a cemetery. You can even rename it if you choose. The ghost will no longer haunt your lot once the Sim’s tomb or urn is gone. They’ll instead come out most nights like the other ghosts do.

  1. How do you have your Sims friend haunt the house when dead? I want to build a haunted house with out murdering or killing my Sims.

  2. My husband on Sims 3 died from a fire and when he became a ghost, it said fiance. Is that supposed to be that way? Also it has been 4 days since he has died and I have no skill challenges or any challenge filled. Why hasn’t it invited me to go to the science lab yet?

  3. im trying to have a ghost baby with one of my files an the first few days the ghost came out but now he is not, do i have to keep mourning or will that just decrease the chances of him spawning? help please.

  4. I restored a ghost at the lab, and I only got an empty green box where the sim’s face should be. The restored ghost is not really there, I can’t click on it. Have you ever heard of this problem or know how to fix it? I tried the resetsim cheat, and it didn’t work.

  5. Is there any particular trick to make ghosts come around? I moved a recently created family into a haunted lot, and had the woman befriend a ghost. They did the “try for baby” deal, and I don’t know if it worked yet. Anyhow, I’d like to see the ghosts come around again, is it all by chance?

  6. this really helped but what i wanna know is if 2 ghosts can get remarried after there death. the wife was born a ghost and she was married to a human and had ghost babies, he recently died of electricution. i brought him back to life and he wants to get remarried to her. is that possible?
